Anonymous asked: Hey i don't know if this has already been asked and it might sound boring but how long have you been playing guitar.. Did you take lessons or self taught and who are your favourite guitarist :)

I started playing when I was a kid, around 8, but I got over it pretty quick as I didn’t have much reason to apply myself other than I wanted to be “lead singer and lead guitarist of a band just like Dexter Holland.” I always considered myself as someone who could play guitar, but when I was about 14 I realised I would get better if I got an electric and played more - by that time my brother pawned my nylon acoustic and bought a steel string that had really high action, a guitar that’s bad on the fingers isn’t good encouragement. I didn’t apply myself until I finished school and traveled a bit. I realized I really enjoyed playing and I was some-what angry that I played too much attention to girls during high school when I could have been getting good at guitar (if someone is young and already good at guitar it most likely means they have social phobias of some kind). I wouldn’t say I was getting good at all, but I noticed I was playing better than most people I met who said they played. Progression  of your own skill is hard to notice, it’s best to pay attention to things that reflect your progress; I found it harder to find people better. Again: I don’t think I am a good player, I’m just outlining one way I noticed I was actually improving. With things like youtube it is easy to feel like you are bad no matter what level you are at. The way I see it, in the world there are an infinite amount of people better than you, and an infinite amount worse. Doesn’t matter what your talent is. You should just try your hardest at what you love, respect that while someone people may consider you shit, someone out there considers you above average.

As for favorite guitarists I would have to say I am more inspired by compositions. I don’t chime in to guitar all that often, I take in the whole song (or album, like Colors by BTBAM). That said I will mention two guitarists that I could spend a great deal of time listening to without being able to focus on anything but their technique: Tosin Abasi, and Guthrie Govan.
